Jing

Jing seems like a fun program. I like the interface, although the sun being at the top of my screen at all times (not just when I'm viewing my desktop) seems a bit invasive, for a program I won't use everyday. Of course, I know that I can move it.

I'm looking forward to this assignment. I liked the handy-dandy instructional video too. I was trying to place the narrator's accent but won't embarrass myself by venturing a guess.

My first Search and Seize is over, and it went pretty poorly for me. There were moments of near-breakdown somewhere in the area of late Saturday. I can't wait to get it back to see how I really did.

My only other noteworthy accomplishment (other than riding my bike to CCP 3x weekly for class) is throwing down FOIE GRAS when playing my wife in Scrabble last night. A bench-clearer, and a two-dollar word, easy, even if the stuff itself is controversial and really disgusting. I *almost* feel bad for restaurants that serve it when their patrons are getting megaphone-berated during their brunches.

  1. I've never had foie gras, but it seems kind of perverse that animal-rights activists concentrate on that and not the industrialization of agriculture (which is the real problem) as a whole. I know they're trying to pick their battles and foie gras is an easy one since it's hard to garner public sympathy for folks who eat cute little ducks and geese whose necks are fattened, but it's a dish that's been on menus since Roman times and what's done to most cows, pigs, chickens in this country is far crueler. Thus, the folks with the megaphones should be ashamed of themselves.

OK I'm off my soapbox now. Sorry. Thanks for the warning on Jing. I haven't started the assignment yet, but I will today or tomorrow.

  2. I will admit that my contempt for foie gras is pretty half-assed. you are correct...there are many worse things done as daily practice in factory farms. However, there is something particularly gross about the "making" of foie gras, i.e. shoving a tube down an animals neck to force feed it grain. Regardless, I'm not much of a hardline vegetarian. More of a scrabble gloater.

Even if I really felt strongly about something, I would never be able to megaphone-berate anyone while they were eating. I have too much respect for the act of dining out!

Its funny, after I made my Jing post, I realized that I'd almost skipped the assignment that's actually due this week. Got a bit ahead of myself.

  3. You know, I was just looking at the syllabus in order to work on the assignment for LIS 2600 that's due on Sunday and I remembered your posting about Jing. Now I understand what you meant above since that assignment (the Jing one) isn't due until the 14th.

As for the foie gras stuff, I pretty much agree with everything you wrote in the 1st 2 paragraphs above, though I have to admit I'm kinda curious to try it (sorry). I didn't mean to come off sounding too harsh/strong, but I do think the animal rights movement (while well-intentioned) can be extremely misguided at times.
